@dougbaggs (Doug Bagg) has recently joined our Street Team. Doug is based in Auckland, New Zealand and he's a street & landscape inspired photographer. We caught up with him and asked some quick questions to get to know more about the talent behind the camera...
Hey Doug, how long have you been a photographer?
I got my first camera in mid-2017 and I’ve been shooting since, so I guess I’ve been a photographer for 2 and a half years.
What or who got you started in photography?
My parents inspired me to pursue photography further and I have many friends who are amazing photographers that encouraged and taught me. I wanted to be able to capture moments in new ways and see where it could take me!
Photographer/s who inspires you? Liam Shaw @churrbroskii
Dexter Cheng @dexter.cheng
Rambo Estrada @ramboestrada
Chris Burkard @chrisburkard
What’s in your camera bag?
Sony a6500, Sigma 30mm f/1.4, Sony 85mm f/1.8, Peak Design Slide Lite, 2 extra batteries, all in the small Sirui SlingLite 8 for day to day shoots. For editing, I recently upgraded to the 2018 15” MacBook Pro.
What's on your mind to purchase next & what would be your dream set-up?
Next purchase - either the Sea Frogs a6xxx Salted Line underwater housing with the pistol grip or the Sony 70-200mm f/4 G lens.
Dream setup - Sony a6500 + Sigma 30mm f/1.4 + Sea Frogs housing, Sony a9ii or a7riii, 70-200mm f/4, Sigma 35mm f/1.4, Sigma 85mm f/1.4, in the Peter McKinnon x NOMATIC backpack.
How important is Photoshop and or Lightroom in your final images?
All my editing is done on Lightroom Classic (I prefer it much more than CC) and it is super important to get the final look that I’m after. I’ll use Photoshop occasionally if I’m wanting to add some cool effects or shift items around in my images.
What advice do you have for somebody who wants to pursue photography?
You don’t need the best gear to take good photos, but you want to invest in gear that will be useful in the future. Also, with the rise of phone photography, don’t be afraid to learn the basics on a phone! You can learn how to compose an image really well with a phone and then worry about the settings later. The main thing, just get out there and shoot!
If you could go anywhere for one day with your camera, where would you go - what would you shoot...
Right now, late November-early December, I would go to Hawaii for the World Surf League Vans Triple Crown of Surfing and shoot the surfers in and out of the water!
How do you draw inspiration to be creative?
My main inspiration is the people I’m shooting with. I always try to go somewhere new with friends and that always hypes me up to take photos that I wouldn’t normally take.
Favourite songs on your playlist right now?
What would you like to be doing in 5 years from now?
Most likely finishing university or working, no idea what I would be studying or where I would be working!
Your stuff is dope, where do we find more?
