Q & A with @my_city_and_travel

Updated: Jan 29

@my_city_and_travel (Kyle Mckean) has recently joined our Street Team. Kyle's based in Auckland, New Zealand and he's a travel/adventure inspired photographer. We caught up with him and asked some quick questions to get to know more about the talent behind the camera...

Hey Kyle, how long have you been a photographer?

For about 2 years now. I decided to take it more seriously when I bought a camera for a trip to Bali. I learnt how to use it properly and haven’t stopped learning since.

What or who got you started in photography?

I have always enjoyed taking photos and I remember buying disposable cameras as a kid. Then my mate encouraged me to get a decent camera. Then in the last few years digital has made it so much easier to learn, and with free tutorials online it is easier than ever.

Photographer/s who inspires you?  @petermckinnon has basically taught me everything I know...

What’s in your camera bag?

I try and limit what I carry. I use a Sony A5100, its super compact mirrorless camera and easy to travel with. The 16-50mm is the lens that’s on my camera 85% of the time and I usually carry my 55-200mm.  I recently bought a DJI Spark too and having so much fun with that

What's on your mind to purchase next & what would be your dream set-up?

I’m actually quite happy with my set up at the moment. I am a Sony fanboy and love their smaller (an some say superior) mirrorless line. If I had the cash, I would be buying a A7 mark 3.

How important is Photoshop and or Lightroom in your final images?

I only use Lightroom mainly for small adjustments or to complement the image. Generally, I’m looking to do two things: enhance the image by amplifying certain colors and cropping to minimise distractions. Lightroom allows me to heighten the capture in a specific way and make them minor tweaks.

What advice do you have for somebody who wants to pursue photography?

I think that most hobbyist photographers will give you the same answer, and that’s just get out and shoot. I used my camera phone for years until eventually upgraded to take it to the next level. Also join a photography group, like @niftyfew and you get the chance to meet a mixture of people with different levels, abilities that you can learn, teach and inspire from each other.

If you could go anywhere for one day with your camera, where would you go - what would you shoot...

I went New York this year and that’s one of the best cities in the world for street photography. I can’t wait to go back again (one day) the city just offers an exceptional amount of opportunity for photography with all its characters and activity.

How do you draw inspiration to be creative?

For me photography is a creative outlet from day to day life. To be honest, I don’t put too much thought or plan towards the outcomes. Sometimes it’s just the act of pressing the shutter without thinking of the result. I just enjoy the act of photography without expectation or stressing out about creating the perfect shot.

Favourite songs on your playlist right now?

I’m musically stuck in 2005, but Spotify tells me my top listened to song this year is Motez – The Future

What would you like to be doing in 5 years from now?

Who knows, I would love to move into videography but right now I’m just enjoying what I’m doing.

Your stuff is dope, where do we find more?
